Mel B and her husband Stephen Belafonte’s alleged split has been subjected to a whole lot of speculation these past few days.
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any messier for the poor couple, what with today’s claims that Stephen has ‘fled the country,’ there’s now a suggestion that the two have fallen victim to the ‘Hello Magazine Curse.’
Bit like the Strictly Come Dancing curse, really.
According to reports in both The Mirror and The Daily Mail, appearing on the front cover of Hello! has been cursing marriages for around 20 years (say WHUT), with a theory that those who pop on a smile and say cheese for the cover are ‘destined’ for a failed marriage.
Yikes. Since Mel, 39, and Stephen, also 39, recently graced the cover to talk family and whatnot, it’s now being suggested that perhaps their magazine deal was the beginning of the end, so to speak.
We sure hope not, but judging by the statistics, there’s definitely cause for concern.
The Mail, for example, have done some sort of highly technical research and found that TEN out of 62 Weddings that featured on the front of Hello over the past ten years have ended in divorce. Three of those happened within the first two years of marriage, with only three couples lasting more than FIVE years.
Doesn’t SOUND too dramatic, but percentage wise, that’s a divorce rate of 16% - 5% higher than the standard divorce rate of 11% within the first six years of a marriage couple’s life together.
Getting away from the boring mathematical side (because quite frankly, we’re a bit rubbish at the percentage malarky), there’s evidence from real-life couples that this theory of a curse could be close to spot-on.
Kim Kardashian is one celeb who fell victim to it, as her marriage to Kris Humphries ended in divorce after just 72 days together.
Westlife’s Brian McFadden and Kerry Katona also appeared on the cover before their divorce, as did Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar and Katie Price and Peter Andre with THAT infamous fairytale extravaganza.
And we all know how that one sadly ended.
Mel appeared on the front cover which came out earlier this week, pictured alongside Stephen AND with a wedding ring still on her hand, despite appearing on last weekend’s X Factor without it.
However, as The Mirror argues, Mel had been expressing her marriage fears and troubles to friends PRIOR to the cover, and judging by all the revelations seeping out of the woodwork this week, we definitely cannot attribute ALL of their problems to the cover.
There’s also a theory that a front cover appearance with either family or just your other half COULD be one of a few things – you’re showing the world that you, as a couple, are actually doing fine THANKS, your relationship is in trouble OR you’re celebrating a momentous anniversary or something.
Either way, we think we have to agree that whilst the Hello curse probably has some weighting in the same way as the Strictly curse, there’s most probably underlying problems in that relationship that we, as the public, don’t (and shouldn’t) know about, leading to any breakdowns.
And besides, Hello’s editor Rosie Nixon has previously denied all of this so that must count for something, right?
We just hope Mel and Stephen can sort things out before things get any worse.
