Beck might have been excited when Kanye West ‘storming’ the stage during his Album of the Year acceptance speech at this year’s Grammys, but not *everyone* was quite so impressed.
Enter Garbage’s lead singer Shirley Manson, who’s taken it upon herself to write the rapper an open letter slamming his awards show antics and calling him a complete twat.
ICYMI, Sunday night’s Grammys saw the rapper storm the stage when Beck won Album of the Year over Kanye’s BFF Beyoncé, giving us deja vu to that time he did it to Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs.
At the time, it looked like Kanye was just mocking himself (what a joker), but it all got a bit awkward when he spoke to E! News after the event, ranting that Beck “needs to respect artistry” and should’ve given the award to Bey instead.
Shirley, 48, wasn’t so down with Kanye’s supposed lolz, and has written this open letter to the 37-year-old hubby to Kim Kardashian: “Dear Kanye West,
“It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry.
“You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK.
“You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt.
“In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own.
“Grow up and stop throwing your toys around.
“You are making yourself look like a complete twat.
“Ps. I am pretty certain Beyonce doesn’t need you fighting any battles on her account. Seems like she’s got everything covered perfectly well on her own.
Errr, need some ice for that burn, Kanye?
To be fair, Bey is an independent woman (throw your hands up at me), so Shirley’s definitely got a point there.
We won’t comment on the rest, but go on gurl for standing up to Yeezus.
Still, at least Kanye didn’t manage to pee off Beck too much, with the winner later responding to the whole rant hoo-haa by saying: “I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody.
“How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right? I still love him and I think he’s a genius – I aspire to do what he does.”
Rather modestly, or maybe to appease the genius that is Kan, Beck went on to insist that he actually agreed with this opinion.
When asked whether Bey should have won his trophy the singer replied: “Absolutely. I thought she was going to win.
“Come on, she’s Beyonce!”
We reckon Beck should be allowed to boast about his brilliant win to his heart’s content, without ANYONE interrupting him, so gloat away, Beck.
Meanwhile, we’ll just sit here and wait for Kanye’s response to Shirley’s open letter. It’s sure to be something real special.
