Isaiah “Ikey” Owens, the keyboard player of Jack White’s touring band and a member of the Mars Volta, has died at age 38. A message about the musician’s untimely passing was posted to Third Man Records Tuesday. At the time of his death, he was on tour with White’s band in Mexico.
“It is with great sadness that we tell the world of the passing of the incredible musician Isaiah ‘Ikey’ Owens. He will be missed and loved forever by his family, friends, bandmates and fans,” the band’s statement read. “Out of respect for Ikey, the remaining shows of the Jack White Tour in Mexico have been canceled.”
“We will all miss you, Ikey,” the post finished. “You were and are an incredible artist.”
White posted the same statement to his official Facebook page. It was liked and shared thousands of times by his fans and followers.
Owens was found in a hotel room at the Camino Real Hotel in Puebla Tuesday morning, Mexico’s Periodico Digital reported. Drugs and alcohol were reportedly found in his room, but the cause of death has not yet been determined, the news site stated.
Owens, a native of Long Beach, california, began to tour with White in 2012. Before that, he worked with several bands including the Mars Volta and Free Moral Agents. He also worked at the Fingerprints record store in Long Beach.
“I’m speechless right now,” Fingerprints owner Rand Foster told Pitchfork. “Ikey worked at the shop for several years, so this is really close to home. I keep thinking of his family, friends, and bandmates. He was a good guy and we’re gonna miss him. He did endless work for the Long Beach music scene… I am still trying to get my head around this.”
Fans took to Twitter to share their condolences. Some of their messages have been posted below:
