She faced major public backlash when she quit I’m A Celeb after just three days last week, but now Gemma Collins‘ brother has spoken up in her defence.
While the TOWIE star spent most of her 72 hours in the jungle moaning about the conditions and lack of food, her bro reckons that it’s actually because she’s been so ‘emotionally fragile’ recently, and jungle life was the final straw.
Speaking to Heat, Russell said: “Underneath the brashness, she’s very fragile and I think this could be the final straw. She can only take so much.”
Talking about the alleged assault that Gemma experienced at the hands of her ex shortly before going on the programme, he added:
“I think the events before going [to the jungle] were devastating for Gemma, and she went out there feeling very vulnerable and very insecure.”
While many viewers mocked the fact that the reality star seemed unable to cope with the *very* small amounts of food that campmates had, APPARENTLY it was because it was such a dramatic change for Gems.
A source told Now Magazine that the star had been eating a staggering 5000 calories a day before going into the jungle, dropping to just 500 when she was there.
That’d be a shock to anyone’s system!
Russell added: “She tries to lose weight and then goes back to eating because she’s unhappy.”
Talking to The Sun, the 33-year-old revealed that her very, very short time in the jungle was tainted by THAT huge bust-up with her ex Alex Moss just hours before she jetted off to the jungle.
GC was apparently very tearful as she recalled how she struggled to cope with the aftermath of the fight which, when mixed with the trials and tribulations of jungle life, just didn’t sit well with the TOWIE star.
She revealed: “The jungle was harder than I ever expected, I am just not as strong as I thought I was.
“A personal and very serious incident that happened to me hours before I flew to Australia affected me in camp far more than I could have imagined and I just couldn’t carry on in there.
“It was my decision to go in regardless and I never expected not to complete my time in there. I am so, so sorry that I have let people down, but I had to make the decision to walk away.”
Okay, so we think she perhaps should’ve stuck it out for a week or so, but since we have no idea what it’s really like down there, we can’t really judge can we?
Gemma and Alex had been involved in a fight back in Essex before the show, with GC apparently calling cops after claiming Alex had assaulted her. He reportedly handed himself in to police a few days later.
If you are as avid a viewer as us, you probably would’ve noticed GC’s particular struggle with the lack of food in the jungle. Not that she mentioned it or anything. Ahem.
She spoke about that side of jungle life to the paper, saying: “I was very hungry in there. But when Craig Charles spoke about starving children it put it into perspective for me.”
Pretty good attitude really.
She added: “Walking into the jungle I wanted to walk straight back out again. Everything was hellish. I will never, ever, ever come to Australia again. I’ve caused so much trauma to myself.”
Err, unlucky Australia. Although, you DO know that all of Oz isn’t just one giant jungle, right?
She added: “I don’t actually think I’ll be able to work or move again until next year.”
She also said that “playing up to the cameras” made her feel like a “puppet” and has left her pretty traumatised.
Well at least she’s safely back on Brentwood soil now, eh?
