So it turns out that appearing on TV screens for a month is now enough to class you as a celebrity. Jake Quickenden is entering the jungle for the latest series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, apparently.
The 26-year-old singer left in week three of X Factor this year. WEEK THREE! To show just the level of celebrity that is required to get to week three of X Factor, let’s have a look who has left in the third week of previous series; Miss Dynamix, MK1, Sami Brookes (remember her?!), John Adeleye, Miss Frank. We could go on. Would any of them have ever been on I’m A Celebrity in previous years? NO. NO is the answer. Because NONE of them are celebrities.
Jake will apparently be joined by the likes of Gemma Collins and Vicky Pattison in the jungle. Both from reality shows, famous for nothing else other than being loud and and on TV.
So the question simply must be asked. Are we running out of stars?
It would seem so. Take a look at the last series of Celebrity Big Brother. Kelly Brook‘s then boyfriend David Macintosh? (Just DON’T mention Kelly, mmk?) How about a person who is best known for… watching TV. George Gilbey, we’re looking at you. And don’t get us started on Dee Kelly. What are ANY of them famous for? What have they actually done?
Lauren Goodger made her name on The Only Way is Essex. Since leaving, she has appeared on Dancing On Ice and Celebrity Big Brother. She is now a professional reality star, jumping from one programme to the other. Wait a second, what does she actually DO? Can anyone remember?
In year’s gone by, Strictly Come Dancing has been a bastion for high class celebrity. We’ve had news readers (Susanna Reid, John Sergeant) an ACTUAL member of Destiny’s Child (Ok, not exactly Beyonce, but Michelle Williams nonetheless) and successful Olympians such as Louis Smith and Victoria Pendleton. Now we have Mark Wright. They may say he’s a radio DJ, but we all know the truth – he is simply a good looking Only Way is Essex star who got lucky.
And how about Alison Hammond? Since appearing on Big Brother in 2002, she has appeared on Celebrity Fit Club, I’m A Celebrity, Celebrity Coach Trip and Celebrity Masterchef, among others. Now she’s onto Strictly. Quite an impressive CV.
Just how low is the barrel going to be scraped? Are we indeed now outside of the barrel, on the floor itself? We’ll have to see next year, when we get George Gilbey, Stephanie Nala, Alison Hammond, Mark Wright, someone who left on week two of Great British Bake Off and Dee Kelly fighting it out in brand new series No Really, I Promise I’m A Celebrity. They’ll learn to dance while covered in bugs in a house they can never escape, based in Essex. We can’t wait. Should be a real LOL.
