She might seem like one of the most inoffensive people on our TV screens, but former pop star Jamelia has seriously got some people’s backs up this week.
A LOT of people in the Twitterverse got VERY, VERY angry when the Loose Women panelist decided NOT to wear a poppy to mark Remembrance Day this week.
TAKE A CHILL PILL, TWITTER.
While the 33-year-old explained to viewers that she had donated money but only felt the need to wear a poppy on Armistice Day, some people were still unimpressed. Like, very.
One viewer tweeted: “jamelia has been on all week without wearing a poppy I know it’s a free country put she should show respect to our fallen!!!!”
So. Many. Exclamation. Marks.
The star explained: “I completely appreciate and respect what the poppy stands for, I support and I always donate to the poppy appeal, I don’t feel the need to display it publicly.
“I support and donate to many different charities, it would be very unrealistic for me to wear all of the badges, bands from the charities I support all the time.”
She added: “On Armistice Day if I am doing something professionally then I will wear one as I think it’s important on that day to show respect and show that you care.”
Fellow panelist Janet Street Porter also made the decision not to wear a poppy, writing in her Yahoo blog:
“I am asked every single day to wear t-shirts (like the ridiculous feminist one Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg sported the other day), wrist bands, badges and ribbons to ‘raise awareness’ for worthy causes.
“But a new survey shows that the public favour charities which run services rather than ones which promote awareness. We like to see where our money is going and judge effectiveness by tangible results.”
IT’S A FREE COUNTRY, PEOPLE.
