Alright, so it’s no big secret that Jessie J can pen herself a catchy tune or two, but what did she do before singing her way to the top of the charts?
Write hugely successful tunes for people like Miley Cyrus in order to pay her rent, apparently.
Yep, in case you didn’t know (like us), J-J-J-J-Jessie J was the songwriting brains behind that ‘Party In The USA’ tune that’s catchier than winter flu, and thanks to its success, she was able to actually pay rent for three whole years.
And then a little bit more, of course.
Talk about having the skills to pay the bills and then some.
Talking to Glamour magazine about life before Do It Like A Dude, Jessie revealed that putting pen to paper for other artists helped her finances massively, which in turn helped her pay things like rent and whatnot.
QUICK, CHUCK US OUR NOTEBOOK. This songwriting business can’t be too hard, can it?
OKAY IT CAN.
Jessie told the magazine: “You’ve got to write songs, that’s where the money is, being an artist. Party In The USA paid my rent for, like, three years.
“Actually it was way longer than that. That’s where I get most of my money. I write songs. I’m a singer.”
Thanks for the clarification.
She added: “I love endorsements and stuff, but that’s all added on.”
She also spoke to the magazine about other female artists, discussing the fact that she believes many female singers are “speaking about the same thing” in their lyrics these days.
She said: “All women are saying, singing and speaking about the same thing, but in their own way – love, heartbreak, reassurance, sexiness, belief, how we look, how we feel. We’re all singing about it and doing it.”
Fair point. Still, Jessie can rest assured that she’s still up there as one of the best songwriting talents in the UK right now, so that must be pretty nice.
Meanwhile, we’re still sitting here rhyming things with ‘Yahoo.’ It’s gonna be a great song, promise.
Jessie previously spoke about her experience with that Miley classic back in 2011, when she revealed that her label decided the song would fit the former Disney star better than our homegrown talent.
She revealed: “You know what’s more weird though, is that you’re not actually there when they record it.
“I recorded ‘Party In The USA’, played it for the label but they didn’t think it was right for me. So they pitched it and two weeks later it was number one in six countries.”
Perhaps Miley could repay the favour and write a little ditty for Jessie one day? Or organise a duet?
The possibilites are endless.
Now, what rhymes with ‘Direction’?
