Kanye West has revealed that the August 2011 London Riots are what “inspired” him to create his Adidas fashion range, with the rapper wanting to make fashionable clothing available to people who can’t afford high-end designer clothes.
Yeezy shared that he was in London at the time of the looting, and saw how badly youths wanted the fancy clothing, which we’re fairly certain wasn’t the actual cause of the rioting, but it was a side effect of it nonetheless…
The rapper said of his Yeezy Boost collection: “I also just wanted to say a major influence was the London riots because I was living in London at that time and saw the way that the kids wanted the clothes and I didn’t have the skill set to do the more inexpensive clothes.
“This designer said to me one time, we were looking at something online, ‘This looks like a really bad couture designer that no one knows’. Think about the idea of a really terrible couture designer, which there are a lot of. I didn’t have the skill set to do inexpensive clothes.
“Now I have a team of really, really great designers that speak in a very Apple, Pixar-type [way].”
Erm… To be honest, we’re not entirely sure about what he’s going on either, but have a feeling that it means his next range will be a tad cheaper than his current $350 Yeezy trainers…
The 37-year-old has also shared recently that he has high ambitions, and wants to emulate the career of Apple founder, Steve Jobs, at high-street store Gap.
He told Style.com: “One of my dreams was to be the head creative director of the Gap. I’d like to be the Steve Jobs of the Gap … When I say Steve Jobs of the Gap, as I talk to the people at the Gap right now, I’m not talking about a capsule [collection].
“I’m talking about full Hedi Slimane [Saint Laurent paris creative director] creative control of the Gap is what I would like to do.
“And I can say this because it doesn’t conflict with my Adidas contract.”
Well, nobody can accuse Kanye of dreaming small, can they?
