Lance Bass has admitted that bloggers like ‘malicious’ Perez Hilton ‘bullied’ him into coming out as gay back in 2006.
The former *N Sync star, who married boyfriend Michael Turchin last year, has spoken out about how the press hounded him into coming out to his fans as well as his friends and family.
No-one should be hounded into making the big step and coming out, and, more importantly, his sexuality should be viewed as something really positive, rather than part of a ‘malicious’ campaign.
Speaking to Attitude magazine, the 35-year-old revealed: “Two years before I came out I was really bullied on the internet by bloggers, that’s when Perez Hilton just started and was just really malicious against me.
“So, because of the bloggers like him hounding me, all the other magazines started calling me and saying, ‘Look, we know you’re gay, you can write the story with or without us, but we have to write it.’
“I decided to go with People [magazine] and I think they did a great job. I had 24 hours to decide if I was going to come out or not, and within 24 hours it was on the stands.”
He also opened up about dealing with his sexuality during his career in *N Sync, admitting: “I had a lot of pressures on me at that point. Not only was I keeping the secret from my family, but I also had this career with four of my best friends.
“I knew, in the late 1990s/early 2000s, that if I came out, people would hate ‘N Sync, and that would be the end of our career. There was no way I was going to do that to my four best friends, so, as long as I was with them, I was asexual.”
It’s a such a shame that Lance felt that way.
Deciding to keep “focused on work” to keep himself “out of trouble,” Lance avoided any sort of relationship whilst in the band, before finally being able to ‘find himself’ once the band took a hiatus in 2002.
He added: “It wasn’t until I realised there wasn’t going to be another *N Sync album that I felt ready!
“I wasn’t even that sad about the end of ‘N Sync as I felt that I’d actually get to be myself from then on. That’s when I started finding myself and started dating guys – it was great.”
Despite facing some difficulties after coming out, with the singer admitting that his mum had to deal with nasty homophobic comments in her hometown in Mississippi, Lance has seemingly come out of everything much stronger, and married his long-term boyfriend Michael last year.
And what a ruddy gorgeous Wedding it was!
Speaking to Brides magazine about Michael, Lance revealed: “Right away, I knew I wanted to get to know him.
“I was very attracted to him and I thought he was sweet, but I just wasn’t sure how interested he was in me. It was a situation where I knew right away that I wanted to be friends with him, but I had no idea it would lead to a romantic relationship.”
We’re SO happy that Lance is now happily married, and has put his past experience with the media behind him.
Congratulations to both Lance and Michael, you beautiful couple you.
