This weekend Victoria Park will be transformed.
Lovebox Festival 2014 will be setting up shop this Friday and Saturday in Tower Hamlets for another round of eclectic music, arts and culture curation. Over 80,000 festival goers will descend on the park over the course of the weekend to take in some sun and sounds – and a few sights in between (one year had a GIANT treehouse and a bowling alley! What will be there this time around?).
Lovebox is a boutique music festival started by DJs Groove Armada as a club night back in 2002. The event has grown every year since then with the festival becoming a must-see occasion with its heavy emphasis on visual design and atmosphere beyond seeing a few music acts (though it’s got those in spades). While initially a very dance and urban music oriented fest, Lovebox has broadened its scope over the years to include folk, pop, and rock.
massive dance duo Chase and Status are headlining Friday and MIA will be bringing her politicised brand of urban pop to the headline slot of Saturday. The overall line-up is reflective of Lovebox’s varied, eclectic and even eccentric nature. Popstress Katy B will be there along with Wild For the Night rapper A$AP Rocky. However right alongside them will be the orchestral pop of French artist Woodkid, the psychedelic indie rock of The Horrors and the moody smoke of trip-hop singer Banks. That’s barely scratching the surface of this line-up of big names, cutting edge artists and rising acts. Check out the full list here.
Act you definitely can’t miss?
The whole line-up is strong and varied enough that even if you don’t recognise the name you’re likely to have a good time checking out some new acts and making some discoveries. That being said we’d like to point you in the direction of The Correspondents (electro swing meets jungle with scat rapping by a man wearing a jester’s costume), mount Kimbie (heavy rock meets ambient electronic duo), The Gaslamp Killer (a DJ who looks like the most burnt out hippie of burnt out hippies) and the previously mentioned Woodkid, who’s the only artist who can make you feel like an orchestra is beating on you with PVC pipes (in a uniquely good way).
What’s the weather meant to be like?
R-O-A-S-T-I-N-G. This week the UK is supposed to be hotter than Barbados, with particular swelter being felt in the Capital. Bring sunblock, cool drinks and sunnies – you’re going to need them on Friday in particular. It will be marginally cooler Saturday (but still HOT) with chances of rain in the morning and evening.
Can you still get tickets?
Sadly Lovebox has only just sold out – but there’s always next year!
