Radio 1 has denied claims that Madonna has been ‘banned’ from the station’s playlist after being deemed too ‘old and irrelevant’.
Despite topping charts for over 30 amazing years (!!!), Madonna, 56, and her latest single ‘Living For Love’ have been shunned from the station.
It’s claimed that Madge isn’t quite youthful enough for Radio 1′s target audience of 15-29 year-olds, although any Lucky Stars (sorry) listening to Annie Mac’s evening show WERE treated to the new track last month, as evening shows can play non-playlist tracks.
So she hasn’t been TOTALLY shunned, then?
A Radio 1 insider has reportedly revealed all about why Madonna’s Music wasn’t put Into The Groove (AKA the playlist. SORRY), ‘revealing’ that it’s all down to ‘relevance’ and ‘meeting the needs’ of the station’s younger listeners.
The insider told The Mail on Sunday: “At the end of the day it’s all about relevance. It’s natural that as an artist gets older their audience goes elsewhere and Radio 1 has to reflect that.
“The station has a duty to meet the needs of younger listeners. I don’t think the audience is losing sleep that it is not playing Madonna in the same way that it used to.”
Interestingly, 72-year-old Sir Paul McCartney has fallen through the cracks of this theory, getting himself played on the station thanks to his collaboration with Rihanna and Kanye West.
However, a Radio 1 spokesman has denied that all of this is true, explaining: “Tracks are chosen on musical merit, and while around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.”
So there you go.
Still, Madonna can’t get too Hung Up on her lack of Radio 1 plays, as her new track IS being played on Radio 2.
Madonna premiered the video for ‘Living For Love’ on Snapchat a couple of weeks ago, which saw her dress as a sparkly matador and tease some proper FIT male dancers who are dressed as bulls with a red cloth.
Directed by JACK, the video sees the male dancers do their thing in horned masks opposite Madge herself.
It’s all somewhere between slightly strange and wonderfully brilliant, and that’s good enough for us.
We’re pretty sure Madonna won’t be losing too much sleep over this Radio 1 shunning, and we’re *pretty* sure she’s got something else up her sleeve for the not-too-distant future.
You just never know with her, do you? And that’s why we love her.
