She’s pretty used to her albums debuting at number one, but Madonna missed out on the top spot this weekend after Sam Smith pipped her to the post.
While 11 of her 13 studio albums have gone straight in at number one, ‘Rebel Heart’ languished at number 2 after a surge in sales for Sam’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’ over the weekend.
Bet she’s not a happy bunny about this!
The superstar’s 13th studio album seemed set to top the chart after spending the entire week in the lead but a certain performance on Friday night’s Comic Relief *might* have thrown one heck of a spanner in the works.
Sam teamed up with John Legend for the official Red Nose Day single ‘Lay Me Down’, which prompted a major spike in sales for his album after performing it during the BBC 1 telethon.
The bestselling album, which was actually released way back in May 2014, has topped the chart a staggering six times during the last year.
Time to give someone else a chance, Sam?
To rub salt in more of Madonna’s wounds, the 22-year-old only out-sold Mads by 12,000 copies, meaning that he didn’t over-take her by much.
Clearly over-the-moon about topping both the single and the album chart, Sam wrote on Twitter:
“I am in complete shock. A double number one!!!!.”
Adding: “Thank you with all my heart for making ‘Lay Me Down’ number one!! Truly the most important song and number one I’ve ever had!!
“massive shout out to comic relief,
@johnlegend and @jimmynapes on making this possible!! Such an incredible cause!! Overwhelmed x”
Just a stab in the dark here but we *think* he’s pretty happy about the whole thing.
