The 36-year-old actress and singer petitioned for bankruptcy at Kingston-Upon-Thames County court.

The former Eastenders favourite found fame as down-on-her-luck Tiffany Mitchell before going on to pursue a successful career as a singer.

Her biggest hit, ‘Perfect Moment’ debuted at number one in the UK charts back in 1999 while she made a return to acting in 2003’s Love Actually, starring alongside Hugh Grant.

Martine also penned The Times bestseller ‘The Mistress’ in 2009 and signed a lucrative deal with yoghurt brand Activia in 2010 before being replaced by Gok Wan last year.

Clearly there isn’t as much money in yoghurt as we all thought.

The star’s official website has made no mention of the bankruptcy, instead stating that Martine is currently working on her second novel and a re-launch of her singing career.

The statement reads: "Martine is currently working on her 2nd novel after huge success with Times Best Seller 'The Mistress'.

"Martine has had many requests to relaunch her music career and is currently in the studio working on new material. Watch this space…"

David Standish, joint trustee and restricting at KPMG said of Martine's bankruptcy: "We are now responsible for administering her estate and are in the process of establishing the individual's assets and liabilities; the largest creditor being Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs."

Martine McCutcheon is yet to make a statement.
