McBusted At The O2 Review: 14 Reasons Why McFly and Busted Belong Together

It’s been nearly ten years since Busted announced their split.

But amongst 20,000 screaming fans at the 02 as part of a 35-date sold out arena tour (it was meant to be to be 11 but extended due to phenomenal demand), it almost feels like a Busted and McFly mash-up in the form of McBusted was SUPPOSED to happen.

Here are the best bits from the band’s tour at the 02 Arena in London, as former Busted stars Matt Willis and James Bourne join McFly boys Tom Fletcher, Harry Judd, Dougie Poynter and Danny Jones on stage as a six-piece super-group.

1. The rip-roaring entrance

The show starts with footage of the 2005 press conference where Busted announce their split – before James Bourne devises a plan to fast-forward to 2014 and become a mega-group with McFly (hence the moment when McBusted was born).

James and Matt fly on stage in a DeLorean to the Back To The Future soundtrack before fireworks burst and the McFly boys take to the stage to perform ‘Air Hostess’ as a six-piece. Talk about making an entrance.

2. Danny replacing Charlie ‘Eyebrows’ Simpson

He refused to go back on tour with his former Busted bandmates as he was focused on his own career (fair enough!) but Charlie Simpson’s absence was hardly missed.

Danny Jones from McFly took over most of his vocals, with his raspy voice perfect for filling in Charlie’s lyrics in songs including ‘You Said No’ and ‘Who’s David’.

3. The time Danny and Matt looked like BFFs

They’re from different bands with Matt finding fame with Busted before Danny jumped onto the scene as the cute guitar player and backing vocalist for McFly.

But the pair engaged in some proper bromance as they shared the mic together for songs including ‘Nerdy’. TOO. CUTE.

4. The first McFly song!

The show started with a back catalogue of Busted’s top hits (‘Air Hostess’, ‘Britney’, ‘Who’s David’ etc) so it was no surprise when fans’ screams were heightened as the first McFly song was played.

‘Five Colours In Her Hair’ was the song that catapulted McFly from obscurity to the top of the charts and it was even better as a six-piece.

5. The moment the crowd went wild, Obviously

If Busted songs got people dancing in the aisles (or trying to) – it was McFly songs that got the crowd singing along in their thousands.

The fans knew every word to ‘Obviously’ and reminded us that every girl wants to be serenaded to a McFly song. Preferably by a McFly boy. Preferably Dougie.

6. The stunning Sleeping With The Light On scene

It’s one of the slower songs from Busted’s repertoire so the boys calmed themselves down for a few minutes to serenade the crowd with the ballsy ballad hit.

Fans jumped at the chance to wave their phone’s flash in each other’s faces as they sung along to ‘Sleeping With The Light On’ – and it made for quite a beautiful scene. N’aww.

7. The alien invasion

The boys exited the stage for a few moments as a fake news report about an alien invasion appeared on the O2’s giant screens.

A minute later, the McBusted boys were seen entering the arena on a giant UFO as they jumped into our FAVE McFly song, ‘Star Girl’. Which got us thinking, we REALLY miss Star Girl Fridays on Radio 1. *sob*

8. The Thunderbirds throwback

It’s the song we often forget about as it wasn’t featured on one of their main albums and was released towards the end of their fame.

But McBusted’s version of ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’ was insane and quite frankly the song we had stuck in our heads ALL night.

9. The Jackson 5 cover

If we were to pick any song for McBusted to cover, Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ wouldn’t be at the top of the list.

But it got us out of our seats and singing along in no time – mainly due to the band’s unrivalled enthusiasm.

10. The T-shirt gun moment

You can always rely on those Busted boys to get up to something a little bit naughty.

Matt Willis and James Bourne were wielding t-shirt guns that threw branded tees out halfway across the area. As you do.

11. The awkward ball drop (yes, really)

A bunch of oversized bouncy balls were dropped into the arena for the band’s performance of ‘What I Go To School For’.

It was all going well and the crowd was going wild – until a giant basketball hit a cameraman on the head (it was being filmed for the tour DVD) and knocked the camera off. It was mega awks – we tried REALLY hard not to laugh.

12. The Wedding video crash

Tom Fletcher’s wedding speech went viral last year after he performed a beautiful rendition of ‘All About You’ for wife Giovanna.

But Busted’s Matt and James crashed the video in a hilarious spoof moment that proved the boys can all take the piss out of themselves.

13. The wedding outfit

‘Crashed The Wedding’ is one of our fave ever Busted tracks – and we loved it a lot more with Matt Willis performing in a wedding dress. Suits you, sir.

Even better – bassist Dougie Poytner was playing the guitar WITH HIM as he was on his back. Amazing.

14. The finale

It’s impossible to please every fan at a gig but we had everything crossed hoping that the boys would play ‘All About You’.

They did! And we felt all the better for it – although a little soppy by the end. Thankfully they closed the show with ‘Year 3000′ which was just the uplifting sing-a-long number we needed.

And an honourary mention to…

Dougie’s hair. LOVING the ponytail, Dougs.

Team Celeb left feeling more energized and invigorated than EVER after the McBusted gig.

The guys were better as a 6-person conglomerate than they were as two separate bands – so we reckon it was less of a comeback, more of a resurgence.

We see this as the start of something massive for the newly formed super-group so we’re excited to see what the future holds for them. Wembley, perhaps?
