Miley Cyrus has explained what it was like bravely coming out to her mum, Tish, when she was aged 14, admitting that it was “hard” for her mumma to understand at first.
The singer, who appears naked on the cover of Paper magazine while cuddling an actual pig, revealed why her Happy Hippie Foundation is so very close to her heart.
The Happy Hippie Foundation was founded last month, and aims to raise awareness of issues affecting homeless young people, the LGBT youth community and other vulnerable populations.
Recalling her own experience of coming out to her mum as a teenager, she told Paper: “I remember telling her I admire women in a different way.
“And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys. And it was so hard for her to understand.
“She didn’t want me to be judged and she didn’t want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has.”
The 22-year-old singer continued on to speak about her “fluid” (the magazine’s words, not hers) gender and sexuality identity, admitting that she’s had notable romances with women, but she “never brought it into the spotlight.”
Her relationships with famous men, Liam Hemsworth and Patrick Schwarzenegger being two of the most well-documented, have, on the other hand, been very much in public knowledge.
She added: “As long as you’re not hurting anyone, your choices are your choices.
“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with.
“Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”
The chat wasn’t all about Miley’s relationships though, with the singer also explaining that she decided to set up a homeless charity when she noticed the inequality between her life and the lives of others.
“I can’t drive by in my f**king Porsche and not f**king do something,” she said.
“I see it all day: people in their Bentleys and their Rolls and their Ubers, driving past these vets who have fought for our country, or these young women who have been raped. I was doing a show two nights ago, and I was wearing butterfly nipple pasties and butterfly wings.
“I’m standing there with my tits out, dressed like a butterfly. How the f**k is that fair? How am I so lucky?”
