Natalie Imbruglia has released her first song in six LONG years, and 18 VERY LONG years since she made our lives approximately 100x better with the release of ‘Torn’, which still makes us bawl like a baby.
Man, we feel old.
Natalie’s long-awaited comeback single comes in the form of a cover of Daft Punk’s ‘Instant Crush’, which originally features Julian Casablancas on vocals.
Smashin’ choice, Nat.
As predicted, Natalie sounds really ruddy fantastic on the cover, nailing her vocals and making us wonder if she ever really went away.
The video, which we’ve had on repeat all day because we’re mildly obsessed, is giving us major ‘Torn’ deja-vu as the 40-year-old sings directly to camera while a man sits at a food-filled table behind her.
Yes alright, so there was no food-filled table and more furniture moving (and t-shirts with golden dragons on) in her 1997 video but you get the idea. The whole thing is basically a fifties version of her classic 90s vid and we just can’t get enough.
Probably because we love nothing more than a slice of nostalgia. With a bar of chocolate on the side.
Speaking about the video, in which she looks pretty emotional while trying to communicate with an unresponsive, mannequin-esque guy at the dinner table, Natalie praised Joe Stephenson for his work.
She told Mashable: “I thought his treatment was fantastic, really interesting; I loved his references. It was really like Stepford Wives, very cinematic and just clever. I didn’t want to do a straight-up performance video for this song.
“I thought it was like a bit of a story -– it depends on the song, but for this particular song I thought it really needed that, so he just did such a great treatment with it. I’ve been so happy with the video. It’s kind of dark, a little bit Mad Men.”
And we love it too, Nat.
The singer’s new album ‘Male’ is a collection of covers of songs which were all originally performed by men.
Speaking about the concept behind the album, she told Mashable: “I found it was more interesting to hear my vocals on songs done by men because it’s different right away.”
We cannot WAIT to hear it, Natalie. And congrats on the fifties video. Now, if you don’t mind, we’re off to watch it again. And again. And again.
Oh, and here’s the Torn video, which actually shows that Natalie hasn’t aged a single day since it’s release. NOT FAIR.
