We all know that she loves to cause a stir with her music videos, but we think that Nicki Minaj‘s latest offering might have caused a *little* bit too much controversy.
The EMAs host sent Twitter into meltdown on Monday after debuting her vid for new song ‘Only’, which seemed to feature quite a lot of Nazi imagery.
All a bit awks, Nick.
The star faced pretty immediate backlash after the animated video dropped, probably thanks to the fact it appears to be influenced by the Nazi-propoganda films of Leni Riefenstahl, with Nicki posing as a dictator.
THE INTERNET IS NOT ON BOARD WITH THIS, NICKI.
The track, which features Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne sees a cartoon version of the rapper surrounded by swatika-style banners.
Clearly not impressed with the whole thing, fans started urging Nicki to remove the video ASAP, tweeting her their massive DISAPPROVAL, YEAH?
One person wrote: “I guess Nicki Minaj’s publicist forgot to tell her its not PC to dress up like Hitler & make a Nazi-themed music vid?.”
Another added: “Nazi glorification is wrong and I am really sad you did this video….not to mention involving chris brown..”
Even the ADL (The Anti-Defamation League) waded into the debate, releasing a statement, saying:
“Nicki Minaj’s new video disturbingly evokes Third Reich propaganda and constitutes a new low for pop culture’s exploitation of Nazi symbolism.
“The irony should be lost on no one that this video debuted on the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the “night of broken glass” pogrom that signaled the beginning of the Final Solution and the Holocaust.”
Wow – this just gets more and more awkward.
Maybe just stick to twerking and whipped cream in future, yeah, Nicki?!
