Today One Direction turn the grand old age of four.
How time flies, eh?
After successfully taking over the world, nay, universe, it would be easy to forget that they started out as five solo artists, auditioning for the X Factor.
And what auditions they were too.
Liam was momentarily distracted by a ghost mid-song. But he pulled it together.
As ever, Zayn was overwhelmed with emotion.
Louis wore a darling tie/shirt/cardigan combo
Niall got through despite Cheryl saying no.
And Harry was so overwhelmed by the response to his audition he ended up taking a bow. What a pro.
The first stage of boot camp went well for the lads. Although Zayn needed a pep talk from Simon about the importance of bumping and grinding in this industry called showbiz.
Unfortunately for the boys, it didn’t work out as solo performers. SO MANY TEARS.
Luckily for them, a certain Pussycat Doll had a cunning plan.
AND THE world CHANGED FOREVER.
But it was all smooth sailing for the boys after Louis nearly lost his entire foot when frolicking in the sea at Judges’ Houses.
Luckily one doesn’t need a foot to sing, so he performed with the group regardless.
Simon Cowell then decided that a boy band with nine feet between them is exactly what the X Factor needed.
The boys sailed through week-after-week, never ending up in the bottom two.
Unfortunately 1D fell at the penultimate hurdle, finishing third. Simon wasn’t best pleased.
The crushing blow led to Harry suffering a minor breakdown, momentarily becoming obsessed with cats.
But as we all know, this story has a happy ending.
