Oh, it’s a ruddy good day to be British, isn’t it? The sun is shining, Sam Smith has got his voice back and a tonne of British artists like One Direction and Ed Sheeran are making up an impressive 50% of the Top 10 Global Recording Artists of 2014.
Pop the kettle on, would you please? We could do with a strong cup of tea to celebrate. A touch of milk, no sugar. THANKS.
The British Phonographic industry announced that 2014 was a very good year indeed for British talent, with musicians from the UK accounting for an impressive one in seven of all albums sold worldwide.
That’s the highest British share since they started recording all this, don’t’cha know?
Broken down, thats 12 per cent of albums sold in the US, 15 per cent in Canada and 20 per cent in Australia in Italy.
UK music also generated £1.8 BILLION in sales last year, thanks to the likes of Sam Smith and Coldplay continuing to be amazing.
Taylor Swift actually took the first place trophy after selling (and streaming) a whopping 6m copies of ’1989′ worldwide (four for you, Swifty), with One Direction coming in second and nabbing the award for the highest selling British act on the list.
Ed Sheeran came third, following by Coldplay in fourth, Pink Floyd in seventh and Sam Smith in eight.
Give yourselves a very big pat on the back, everyone.
BPI and BRIT Awards Chief Executive Geoff Taylor said: “The achievements of UK artists and labels in 2014 were truly outstanding. They dominated sales at home like never before, releasing all of the top-10 best-selling artist albums of 2014, while climbing higher than ever in the charts overseas.
”Music is a tremendous exports success story for the UK – all around the world, fans are listening to the records we produce, supporting not only our balance of trade but a positive image for Britain overseas.”
