Comedian Bill Maher is facing the wrath of angry One Direction fans after he made a ‘joke’ comparing Zayn Malik to Boston Marathon bomber and terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Yeah, doesn’t *exactly* sound like a funny joke, does it?
Proving that Directioners are still a super strong family, even during tough times (do we EVEN need to remind y’all of March Madness?), fans have launched an online petition demanding the TV host apologises for his ‘islamophobic terrorist joke’.
Bill, who is known for his controversial jokes, made the quip on his Saturday night show ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’.
Referencing Zayn’s decision to leave 1D, he said: “I think after everything we’ve been through, I at least deserved the common respect of being told face to face.
“Just tell me two things, Zayn. Which one in the band were you? And where were you during the Boston Marathon?”
The Boston bombing happened in April 2013, when two bombs exploded near the marathon’s finish line. Three people were killed and more than 250 others were injured.
The bombs were allegedly planted by Dzhokhar (who faces 30 criminal charges) and his brother Tamerlan, who was killed in a police shootout.
Not surprisingly then, the ‘joke’ (hmm) has left many people pretty angry and upset.
Directioners have now launched a petition to get Bill to apologise, saying: “This is not about making Bill Maher a scapegoat and before you disregard this thinking 1D fans are angry because of Zayn Malik, think again.
“This is about how Islamophobia, racism, and discrimination of ANY kind of wrong, shouldn’t be ignored and must end.”
Fans also took to Twitter to air their disgust and sadness about Bill’s comments, getting the #RespectForZayn trending and slamming his ‘racist’ joke.
Bill Maher has yet to respond.
Ibrahim Hooper, the spokesperson for Council on American-Islamic Relations, told People: “It shows that he’s really not missing an opportunity to engage in his Islamaphobic themes.
“He serves to legitimize Islamaphobic in the left which is one of the unfortunate byproducts of his intolerance of Islam and Muslims.”
With everything we’ve been through, it’s lovely to see everyone still coming out in force to support Zayn.
We guess we’ll have to wait and see if Bill DOES apologise.
