Oscar De La Renta Dead: Celebrities And Fans Mourn Fashion Designer On Twitter

Legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta died Tuesday, ABC News reported. He was 82. A family member reportedly confirmed his passing to the news site. The designer was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

De la Renta had practically dressed everyone. His clothes were classic, elegant, feminine and flattering — which helps explain why so many First Ladies wore his clothes. De la Renta’s relationship with Michelle Obama was apparently shaky, but Mrs Obama wore one of his designs, for the first time, on Oct. 8 at the cocktail party after her White House Fashion Education workshop, the New York Times wrote.

“His name alone evokes elegance and timeless beauty. And his designs give each of us a chance to feel like we’re special, too,” she said at the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards, according to Marie Claire.

Hilary Clinton might not consider herself a fashionista, but the former secretary of state has worn de la Renta’s designs since she became First Lady in 1993. Fellow First Ladies Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan also wore his designs, and the George W. Bush Library held an exhibit of his designs this past summer.

De la Renta worked right up until his death. “You know, as I get older and I look back, I think that I have been probably working harder now than I’ve worked in my whole life,” he once said, according to New York Magazine.

He had designed Jenna Bush’s Wedding dress, and recently he designed Amal Clooney’s wedding dress. He even created a gown for his 2015 bridal collection that was inspired by Clooney’s dress, the U.K.’s Daily Mail wrote.

The designer was born in the Domincan Republic in 1932.

Celebrities and fans flocked to Twitter after hearing the sad news and sent their condolences to De La Renta.
