Big Fat Gypsy Wedding‘s Paddy Doherty has been left in mourning following a tragic accident, which stole the life of his 22-month-old great nephew.
David Thomas McDonagh was pretending to clean his father’s friend’s van when it rolled forward at Runcorn Transit Site on September 2nd last year.
At an inquest in Warrington earlier today, statements were read out from witnesses who were unable to attend in person – with many of the toddler’s relatives fearing that they “couldn’t cope” with the hearing, and others being back in Ireland.
Robert ‘Sonny’ McDonagh, David’s father, said that he had been talking to his friend, Douglas Doherty, for around fifteen minutes after he pulled into the Travellers’ site in the van.
Unaware that David was pretending to clean the vehicle, Douglas went to pull away but was met with screams from bystanders, causing him to stop “a foot or two” from where it was.
PC Wilson has confirmed that the van rolled forward at “a very slow speed”, with it being impossible for Douglas to have seen the playing toddler, with it being uncertain whether he was already laying on the ground when the collision happened – either playing, or from falling over.
Robert found his son on the floor at the front of the fan, with paramedics unable to resuscitate him and a post mortem examination attributing a head injury to the cause of death.
Describing the heartbreaking moment, the grieving father said: “Douglas rolled the van forward a foot or two and women were shouting and we knew something was wrong.
“I ran around to the front of the van. I saw my little boy lying down on the floor with his legs underneath the van.
“He wasn’t moving.”
Understandably, Douglas was said to be very “distressed” over the incident during a police interview.
Speaking at the inquest, Dr. Napier said: “It’s a horrifying tragedy for the relatives and no wonder they didn’t want to come.
“I’m sure they haven’t forgotten any of it.
“It’s in their hearts and minds forever.”
It has been reported that a fight broke out at Gorton Cemetery on the day of David’s funeral later on in September, with mourners said to have taken offense when Celebrity Big Brother winner, and the baby’s Great Uncle, turning up to pay his respects.
