Since Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in 2019, she has broken royal protocol on more than one occasion. Although she has made some mistakes, she has received help as she adjusts to her new life, unlike Princess Diana.
When Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, she struggled to fit in with members of the Royal family and received little guidance from her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth. While she was left to learn on her own, Meghan has been given support throughout her transition.
Royal author Angela Levin told Express UK, Princess Diana’s early days in the Royal Family were more “difficult” than Meghan, who has had knowledgeable aides by her side.
“I don’t know about how the Queen feels about some of the protocol that Meghan is either ignoring or doesn’t know and is not getting involved with. But, some of it is quite important, because, although it is old fashioned, this is what the British family is like,” Levin revealed.
Prior to her marriage with Prince Harry, Meghan was an actress, who would voice her opinions about politics and social issues. Since joining the Royal Family, she has occasionally struggled to remain neutral.
“I don’t think the Queen would like much of Meghan speaking out about her political views, because the Royals are not supposed to do that,” Levin explained.
“But, then again it is very early days, and it is so difficult to settle down in the Royal Family, as late Princess Diana found it very difficult,” she added.
The commentator noted that Meghan still has a lot to learn about her place in the royal family, but claimed the Duchess of Sussex is in a better position than Princess Diana was.
“You’re not really helped very much, Meghan has been helped more. But, it is a very difficult family to settle into,” Levin said.
Meghan has reportedly struggled to adjust to the strict rules she is expected to follow. “It’s just been frustrating and stressful to have no voice,” a royal insider previously told Us weekly.
“She’s always relied on her own voice to stand up for others, and for herself. So not being able to say anything is a debilitating feeling. She’s always been so independent, her entire life, and that’s all been taken away from her,” the source added.
