R. Kelly’s legal woes continue as the singer has been arrested for federal sex crimes in chicago.
The disgraced R&B star was arrested Thursday night while outside his home in Chicago on new federal sex crime charges filed in Chicago and Brooklyn, New York. He had stepped out around 7:30 p.m. when NYPD detectives and Homeland Security Investigators arrived to take Kelly into custody.
Kelly had been out on bail following his arrest in February on 10 counts of sexual abuse that reportedly occurred between 1998 and 2010. On top of those charges, he will now be facing another 13 charges.
“The counts include child porn, enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice,” Joseph Fitzpatrick told press Thursday night. Fitzpatrick currently serves as a spokesperson for Chicago’s branch of the U.S. Attorney General’s office.
The indictments had been handed down earlier in the day by northern District of Illinois’ federal court. He is currently being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago and is awaiting his next court appearance.
And despite the charges, Kelly’s legal team continues to deny any wrongdoing on the part of the singer.
“When you’re innocent of charges — and Mr. Kelly has declared his innocence — in America, you know and I know, that you’re innocent until proven guilty,” Kelly’s crisis manager, Darrell Johnson, said on Friday.
“He and his lawyers look forward to his day in court, to the truth coming out and to his vindication from what has been an unprecedented assault by others for their own personal gain,” Steve Greenberg, an attorney for Kelly, told NBC4 in New York. “Most importantly he looks forward to being able to continue to making wonderful music and perform for his legions of fans that believe him.”
Kelly is expected to appear and address these new charges in Chicago first, followed by Brooklyn.
