It took more than 20 firefighters to help put out the blaze.
And now celebrities including Ricky Gervais and Piers Morgan have urged the public to donate money to Manchester Dog’s Home following the devasting fire that claimed the lives of at least 43 animals.
150 dogs have since been rescued from the blaze that has almost completely destroyed the building.
Animal lover Ricky Gervais was quick to retweet the Manchester Evening News message which read: “We have set up a donations page to raise funds for Manchester Dog’s Home following the fire. Please donate or share.”
Piers Morgan also took to Twitter, writing: “Those poor dogs. Please donate here if you can #manchesterdogshome.”
Emmerdale actress Charley Webb also tweeted: “40 dogs have died at Manchester Dogs Home after someone has set it on fire. Please donate to help them.”
Former TOWIE star Maria Fowler was appauled by the suspected arson, tweeting a picture of herself with her dog alongside the caption: “Bed with baby tonight. Some horrible people in the world don’t understand how loving and loyal dogs are #OurChildren.”
An incredible £656,000 has already been raised following last night’s fire with a 14-year-old boy being arrested under suspicion on arson.
Superintendent Marcus Noden said in a statement:”We are working closely with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to establish how this tragedy has occurred.
“We are in the very early stages of the investigation and have a young boy in custody, however we would ask if anyone was in the area and remembers seeing anything suspicious around the dogs’ home that they call police and tell us what they know.
“As a dog owner myself I understand that many people will feel angry and upset about what has happened, but I would ask that they let the police carry out their investigations and not take matters into their own hands.”
