Robert Downey Jr has revealed that he recently reconnected with his ex-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker, who he dated from 1984-1991.
The actor explained how he went on a lovely trip down memory lane in during a work trip in New York City, where he spent some time with his former flame, describing their meet-up as “really cool.”
The 50-year-old actor told Howard Stern on America’s Sirius XM back in October that he had intentions of meeting with Sarah, explaining that their seven-year relationship still meant a “big deal” to him, and that he’d love to meet with her and her husband Matthew Broderick.
He told Howard that he’d “make a point” of seeing Sarah while he was in the Big Apple with his wife Susan.
During Robert’s appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday, the radio show host asked him how it all went, with the actor replying that it actually all went pretty darn well. Woop!
He revealed: “Private stuff aside, we were able to spend some time together and it was really cool. I went over to her place and then we went down the street.
“You know, the funny thing too, is you always have a perception of somebody that you spent a big chunk of your life with and I think it’s typical to the human thing that the further you get away from that in your new relationship, you unintentionally taint your perception of the person.
“Seeing her, I was like, ‘She’s so great and so cool and so funny and so in-command’. I got to meet her kids and I saw the way she and Matthew lived and I respect both of them so much.
“You have fresh eyes and you’re actually willing to go to a deeper level of acceptance and kind of just make peace with the way life is.”
He added that he’s happy with how things worked out, admitting: “Anytime I was in a relationship, I thought, ‘You’re gonna bury me next to this woman.’ It’s not that simple and God has other plans.
“I said everything I wanted to say. It’s a little bit stilted but then there’s this familiarity that overtakes it and you realize you’re just in the presence of this fully mature mother and woman and artist and human being. There’s enough good will left over, you didn’t burn that bridge.”
Aww, how lovely is all that?
Back in 2008, Robert told Parade that he believed his past drink and drug problem had a part to play in his break-up with Sarah.
Admitting that he was “selfish,” he said: “I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is.
“She provided me a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn’t get my act together.
“I was in love with Sarah Jessica, and love clearly was not enough. I was meant to move on. And, after some heartache, she was meant to find her home with a great star.”
