Sam Smith: ‘Homophobia Has Never Affected Me, It Just Makes Me Embarrassed’

Sam Smith has opened up about his struggle coming to terms with his sexuality when he was a teen, and has admitted that although homophobia didn’t bother him, he did end up having a whole load of one night stands when he fell in with a “dodgy” crowd.

Thankfully, the singer is away from all those bad influences now, and is currently nursing heartache after breaking up with his boyfriend, Jonathan Zeizel, earlier this month.

Sam told Rolling Stone magazine of his younger years: “I had a lot of one-night stands. I met a few dodgy friends, people I’m definitely not friends with now.”

Speaking of his first love, the 22-year-old added: “I fell in love with a straight guy last year, and he didn’t love me back. I got trapped in my own mind.

“It makes me emotional, actually. He looked out for me for the rest of school.

“He just made sure that if anyone took the p**s out of me, he would stick up for me.

“He could have made it hell for me.”

N’aww, you go, mystery guy, four for you.

Despite the totally chill guy from school, Sam hasn’t always been surrounded by people who were as comfortable with his sexuality, and the Grammy nominee remembers feeling “embarrassed” by one particularly unpleasant incident, which happened in front of his dad.

Remembering a group who were hurling homophobic abuse at him, Sam shared: “I was just embarrassed that my dad had to see that, because I could only imagine how you feel as a parent.

“You just want to kill them. I was always embarrassed for the people around me.

“It never actually deeply affected me. You just ignore it, you know?”

You have to admit, that is seriously inspirational.

Ignore the haters, babes, we all love everything about you.
