Susanna Reid, who suffers from a mild form of Tinnitus, has revealed her fears about her hearing.
The TV presenter was first diagnosed with the condition ten years ago, and has now admitted that she once feared she’d never hear silence again.
The 44-year-old, who was speaking on Good Morning Britain where she was joined by fellow Tinnitus sufferer Tracey Hudson, revealed how she felt when she was first told she had the condition.
She explained: “When I first started hearing it, which is probably abut 10 years ago, I became quite distressed that I would never hear silence again.“
Tinnitus, which causes sufferers to hear a ringing or buzzing in their ears either constantly or sporadically, can be extremely debilitating and can lead to severe suffering for some.
Talking about her own experience, Susanna was asked what is “the treasured item you lost and wish you could have again,” to which she replied: “Silence.
“I’ve had tinnitus since Finn’s [her second son, aged 10] birth, which probably resulted from a difficult labour.”
It sounds pretty nasty (no pun intended), and sadly there is no known cure for the condition.
Chris Martin, Louis Tomlinson and Boy George also suffer from Tinnitus, with Chris crediting the cause of his to the loud music he used to listen to when he was younger.
Despite admitting that the ringing has ‘stabilised’ since he started protecting his hearing, Chris has previously said: “Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don’t think about until there’s a problem.
“I’ve had tinnitus for about ten years, and since I started protecting my ears it hasn’t got any worse – touch wood. But I wish I’d thought about it earlier.”
Susanna had a rough end to 2014, after splitting from partner Dominic Cotton and having to defend their decision to continue living together.
Talking to Fabulous Magazine at the time, she explained: “We still get on so well, Dom is still such a hands-on dad and we really co-parent. So we live separately but together and happily in the same house.
“I’m not saying everybody can do it and I definitely think people are surprised that we can do it this way.
“Obviously we’ve been through a bit since splitting up, because a separation is always going to be sad. But it’s nice for the children that they know Mum and Dad are still there.
“I’m privileged to have a great relationship with my ex, to the point where we can live together comfortably and he can have a new relationship.”
We just hope Susanna’s Tinnitus improves at least a little bit soon.
