Taylor Swift‘s mum had us reaching for the tissues when she made an emotional speech at the American Country Music Awards this weekend, presenting her wonderful daughter with a Milestone Award.
Andrea, who was recently diagnosed with cancer, was bursting with pride for her talented daughter, giving an emotional and fitting speech before the two shared a touching moment on stage.
In her heartwarming speech, Andrea, 57, referred to Tay as her “constant companion,” adding: “I’ve watched this milestone artist from the time she was a tangle-haired little girl growing up on our farm filled with creativity, until now preparing for her world tour. Her favourite thing is to write a song, tell a story and play a guitar or piano.
“There was the time she was 17 years old, her dad and I strongly disapproved of a certain young man and rightfully so. She was mad, real mad, and she went to her room and closed the door. She came back about an hour later with a song called Love Story.
“I witnessed a young girl with very few friends who has become a young woman with many, learning to stand up for herself and the things she believes in. Whether it’s being brave enough to explore her musical curiosity and having a voice against those who hate and giving of herself to those in need.
“Like many of you with children of your own, I am a very proud mum. So I would like to thank the ACMs for recognizing her in this way and the entire music community for taking such good care of her.
“And to the fans. I know you love her as I love her. And for that, I thank you eternally.”
So. Darn. Lovely. Well done, mama Swift, you wonderful lady.
Taylor, who had watched the speech next to her dad Scott, then took to the stage to make her own speech (after giving her mama a big hug and loads of love, obviously), thanking everyone for being so kind when she moved from country to pop music.
She said: “Somebody once told me that you truly see who a person is when you tell them something they don’t want to hear. You showed me who you are with the grace you accepted it, and I’ll never forget it.
“So happy I learned how to write songs in a town called Nashville. I’m so unbelievably proud that I learned to treat people with kindness and respect from country music.”
And we’re so unbelievably proud of you too, Tay!
Earlier this month, the 25-year-old took to Tumblr to share the heartbreaking news that Andrea is battling cancer.
In a post named “Just So You Know,” she wrote:
I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you. Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now.
For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine. She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it.
The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.
She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle… Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re Healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.
Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this.
We’re sending our love and thoughts to Taylor, Andrea and their family at this difficult time.
And congratulations again, Taylor, on your award, and thank you for such a wonderful speech, Andrea (even if it did make us cry!).
