They have girls throwing themselves at them at every opportunity.
But boyband The Vamps aren’t just having one-night-stands with random girls – in fact, they’re outspoken male feminists who believe in gender equality.
Wow – we’re seriously impressed.
Speaking to us to promote their new single ‘Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart)’, the British group insisted they’re nothing like the image you’d expect of sleazy boys in bands.
“I actually think that as a band, I like to think that we respect girls,” said 20-year-old lead guitarist and backing vocalist, James McVey.
“There’s this stereotype of ‘people in bands’ and we’re really, not like that,” he added.
“It’s weird that people presume so, but it’s mostly girls messing me around than the other way around. We don’t really mess girls around.”
And it sounds like James, alongside lead vocalist 19-year-old Brad Simpson, are the most outspoken members of the group when it comes to gender equality.
Both of them have taken the time to watch Emma Watson’s incredible UN speech on feminism, with Brad saying it was ‘amazing’ and that she ‘totally smashed it.’
“People say that only women can be feminists but I think that men can be feminists too,” said Brad.
“It’s just a quality. It’s like, feminism is feminism. It’s just a quality. It’s brilliant.”
He admitted there’s still a stigma attached to the feminism label – despite its roots in simply having equal opportunities for both genders.
“It’s always like ‘ah feminism’, [always has like a stigma] but for me it should just be that everyone is equal. That’s it. That’s the main thing I think she’s trying to put across,” said Brad.
And he admires the former Harry Potter star for going back into education after the HP movies – and doing something charitable with her fame.
“She’s great, isn’t she? She’s awesome because she went back to uni after Harry Potter. It’s great. I think she’s wicked. She seems like a really nice girl.”
And even drummer Tristan, 20, chipped in with his views on gender equality.
“I love women!” he said.
Hmm… Think you might need to have a watch of Emma’s YT video, Tris!
The boys also admitted that they still get stick from fans’ parents for being ‘One Hit Wonders’ – despite EVERY single they’ve released landing in the top five in the UK charts.
“Sometimes, the mothers or fathers of fans that are very passionate say ‘YOU’RE ONLY A ONE-HIT-WONDER ANYWAY’,” said Tristan.
But they insist on being polite to people – even in the face of such blatant rudeness.
“We’re just not really, rude people. It doesn’t matter if people write about us [being rude], we just try and be nice people anyway,” said James.
“That’s right. Just about, being a good person. Being yourself,” said Brad.
“Whether you’re in a bad moment or not, it’s just about being fair to people,” said Tristan.
Although the boys do seem to be pretty clean-cut compared to some other boy-bands on the scene, they can be just as cheeky as other guys their age.
Like, they tried to pull joint moonies at the Summertime Ball but it got vetoed. Now, they tend to stick to just ‘flashing their nipples’ instead.
And the last time they got crazy drunk?
“Two days ago!” said Brad (the boys celebrated a gig in Brighton by partying in seafront hot-spot Prism, formerly oceana).
“We went pretty hard that night. Tris went mental,” revealed James.
AND the boys avoid hangovers by switching alcoholic drinks with water.
“For every drink, I have to have like a whole bottle of water. I get as drunk as I want and it works,” said James.
See? The most sensible boys in showbiz.
