This is just too sad.
Monica Michael wowed us all during last night’s X Factor when she sang an original song, which she dedicated to her 16-year-old sister.
However, since leaving Cheryl Cole in tears with her impressive audition, Monica has suffered some major heartache with her step-brother dying tragically just weeks later.
24-year-old Monica is struggling to cope after Savvakis Georgiou died after falling into a hotel pool in Cyprus whilst on holiday with friends, he was just 18-years-old.
The story becomes all the more tragic as if it wasn’t for the fact that the water in the pool was so dirty there is a chance that he would still be alive, instead Savvakis remained unseen at the bottom of the pool for twenty minutes and medics were unable to revive him.
This is just horrible.
Speaking to the Sunday People, Monica revealed that her stepbrother had been at the audition with her and her younger sister and now she is going to try and win the show for him.
She said: “It’s hard to believe that he was at my audition and now he is no longer here.
“Sav was a huge, huge fan of The X Factor and he always wanted to see the show and how it was run and I was happy that he got to witness my audition before he died.
“It was really hard to watch the show on Saturday without him and I just hope that he is at peace in heaven.”
Monica went on to speak openly about how the tragedy happened, revealing: “Savvakis was on a boy’s holiday when he fell into the pool.
“It was full of condoms, syringes, and cigarette butts and nobody could see his body at the bottom because it was so dirty.
“If it was not for the fact that it was so filthy, maybe someone could have seen him sooner and saved his life.
“It is so devastating and sad that he drowned in an algae-ridden hotel swimming pool.”
After being under water for up to twenty minutes Savvakis was found and several people tried to revive him, but it was too late.
A post-mortem confirmed that he died as a result of drowning on the 18th of August, just weeks after he had accompanied his sister to her audition.
On last night’s show Monica gave an emotional performance of her original song Pretty Little Sister, which she dedicated to her 16-year-old sister, Natalie.
The judges were hugely impressed, with Simon Cowell saying: “You are why we make shows like this – to find people like you to give them a break.”
Cheryl had a particularly emotional reaction to the song and explained: “It really touched me because my sister writes me poems and she has since I was little and so I completely related to that song.”
Cheryl’s sister writes her poems? Who knew.
Monica obviously got through to the next stage with four very big yeses and she will no doubt continue to make her brother proud as we can definitely see her in the final.
Chin up, Monica – we already love you!
