A flurry of first half goals, and two braces completed in the second half, powered Bayern Munich’s 6-0 victory over Werder Bremen in Bundesliga action Saturday at the Allianz.
Munich tightened their grip on first place and are now seven points ahead of Hoffenheim and Monchengladbach, and they now have 21 goals scored through eight matches.
Werder remains in last place after failing to register a single shot on goal, and have yet to capture a victory this term.
After a scoreless first 19, Phillipp Lahm put Munich ahead for good in the 20th minute followed by Xabi Alonso seven minutes later, a penalty strike for Thomas Mueller in the 43rd and Mario Gotze padding the lead in the 45th.
Lahm, who had yet to score this term, put up another goal in the 79th, right inside the six-yard box off an assist from Xherdan Shaqiri. Gotze’s brace came from Mueller’s assist in the 86th.
The scoring began after David Alaba fed Mueller insider Werder’s area, who then deflected it to an unmarked Lahm at the top of the box for a right-footed shot down the middle for a 1-0 advantage.
Alonso, the former Real Madrid star and major acquisition for the German titans this summer, scored his first Bundesliga goal in stunning fashion. Munich earned a free kick after Werder’s Fin Bartels brought midfielder Pierre Hojbjerg down, which gave Alonso the opportunity for some trickery, slipping his shot underneath Werder’s wall for the score.
Mueller converted his penalty, and Gotze completed a turnaround strike inside the area off another well-placed ball from Alaba to cap the first-half barrage.
