You’d think that it would be common courtesy to give two world class performers, like Idina Menzel and Michael Bublé, a standing ovation if they took the time to fly halfway across the world for a performance on The X Factor.
Not if your name is either Cheryl Fernandez-Versini or Mel B, who caused uproar this weekend as they refused to join Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell in giving the two stars the standing ovation they deserved.
More awkward than a Stevi Ritchie performance.
Despite the well-known tradition of the judges giving guest performers a rousing standing ovation and lots of cheesy grins when they come on the show, Cheryl, 31, and Mel, 39, decided that they didn’t actually want to stand and congratulate Idina and Michael after their fantastic performance of Baby, It’s Cold Outside.
Doesn’t look great does it?
Okay, so their duet might NOT have been perfect, as they found themselves caught in the giggles after Idina fluffed some words and Michael decided to play a ‘silly voices’ game, but Simon and Louis still managed to jump to their feet and applaud their effort.
And anyway, we’d be fluffing our lines too if Michael stood next to us. Hubba hubba.
Speaking after their fun performance, Idina explained: “He’s my best little kept secret… this is the first time we’ve sung this song publicly.
“It’s not easy when you have Michael singing to you.”
We forgive you love.
Cheryl has since offered some sort of explanation as to why the gal pals didn’t stand and applaud, telling The Mirror: “Me and Mel were so engrossed in what was coming up, let’s face it, it was Lauren versus Andrea.
“We applauded them but sometimes it’s difficult with my dress. Sometimes you have to take beauty over disaster. Apart from that we were having a really emotional conversation.”
Interestingly, their outfits didn’t seem to stop them from STANDING UP to enjoy Fifth Harmony’s performance of their absolute TUNE BO$$.
Their performance had more sass and attitude than we did when we were 13 years-old, and the female judges didn’t waste any time in standing up and dancing along to the track.
Your dress isn’t so tricky to stand up in now is it, Cheryl?
Sam Bailey also returned to the stage for a performance of With You from Ghost The Musical, and revealed who she’s backing to win this weekend.
She admitted: “After last night’s performance, I’m going to say Fleur.”
Anyway, we don’t think Idina and Michael will be losing sleep over this controversy. Just perhaps wear easier-to-stand-up-in outfits next week, girls?
