But Zayn Malik seemed to have offended many of them on Monday morning as he waded into the Gaza conflict on Twitter.

Following in Rihanna’s footsteps, the One Direction star posted a message which simply read “#FreePalestine” – opening a floodgate of angry replies.

Zayn was clearly keen to make his views on the horrific situation in Palestine known to his 13 million followers, but probably wasn’t prepared for the MAJOR backlash.

Just hours after the controversial Tweet went out, it had already got 140,000 retweets and favourites and thousands of replies… with angry Directioners turning on each other.

Many Israeli fans tweeted Zayn to tell him that he’d broken their hearts and let them down, with one writing:

“#ZaynYouHaveFansInIsrael You disappointment me so much! how can u say that? U have no idea how much we loveu, you break our heart @zaynmalik.”

Another posted: “Tweeting “Free Palestine” is pretty much the least hot thing a person can do. With a heavy heart, I remove Zayn Malik from my to-do list.”

But some Twitter users were even MORE irate, going as far as to send death threats, with a few users writing “let me kill you” and “kill yourself Zayn.”

Others supported the pop star’s right to say what he wanted, with one fan posting: “ZAYN IS THE BEST! ALL MY RESPECT MALIK! @zaynmalik #FreePalestine.”

Rihanna felt the wrath of angry Twitter users when she posted the same message just a couple of weeks ago, before quickly deleting it.

Admitting that it was actually never meant to be sent, RiRi later changed the message to: “Let’s pray for peace and a swift end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! Is there any hope?”

Perhaps Zayn will follow suit.
