It feels like every single person in the world has had their say on why they think Zayn Malik quit One Direction (our grandma included), and now ‘This Is Us’ director Morgan Spurlock has aired his views.
Having gotten to know the boys pretty ruddy well whilst filming their documentary, which grossed a whopping $67 million worldwide, Morgan knows what goes on behind-the-scenes and has revealed that it was Zayn who struggled most with the boys’ lifestyle.
We know this all happened a week ago now, but it still totally breaks our heart.
Zayn announced that he was leaving the band last week, admitting that he just wants to be a ‘normal 22-year-old’, leaving our hearts in pieces and minds totally frazzled.
Now, Morgan has spoken out to explain that the Bradford boy had long struggled with the hectic lifestyle, being away from his family and fiancée Perrie Edwards, and not being able to properly explore passions and hobbies outside of 1D.
Speaking to the Huffington Post, the 44-year-old said: “He always struggled with being on the road.
“He’s a homebody. He wanted nothing more than to sit in his house and spray paint and draw and do art, and I think this explosion that happened to him – which was something none of them ever predicted – but I think he was the one who struggled with it the most.
“And being away, being on the road, being away from his girlfriend I think finally just got to him, and I think he said, ‘I’m done’.”
He also said that Zayn was “probably [his] favourite guy in the band” and was “probably the best singer in the group.”
We like to think of them as all equally perfect, but each to their own.
Zayn seemed to back up Morgan’s comments in an interview after leaving the band, where he hinted that he didn’t feel like he had control whilst in the band.
He told The Sun: “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad. But at the same time I’ve never felt more in control in my life.
“And I feel like I’m doing what’s right — right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.”
His close relationship with his family has also been well documented, with a source recently telling The Mirror that Zayn turned to his lovely mum for advice on what he should do.
The source said: “Zayn is incredibly close to his mum. She has been his guiding light and he respects her massively.
“She and his dad, Yaser, raised him and his three sisters on very little money but they were always happy and wanted for nothing.
“That has made him realise that happiness is more important than fame and fortune.
“In any case, now he has the fortune he doesn’t need the fame. Trisha pointed this out and told him the family are immensely proud and he wasn’t letting them down by quitting.
“That’s what swung it. If she had told Zayn to stick with the band, he’d have listened.”
Any else got teary eyes and melting hearts right now?
We’re going to be gutted about Zayn’s departure until the end of time really, but if he was as unhappy as Morgan suggests, then we’re just really hoping that he’ll be happier away from it all.
